In around 1915, he began to use folkloric elements in his music. He spent the 1920s in Paris. There, he got in contact with the avant garde, and befriended Darius Milhaud, who encouraged and supported him. But it all changed with the arrival of Brazilian composer Villa Lobos. Through his study of the guitar, cello and clarinet he had mastered the pre-existing tradition but managed to add a unique taste of Brazilian folklore to his own compositions.
